GMC’s revived Hummer is large, powerful, and filled with exciting features like rear-wheel steering. However, owning and operating this vehicle is both expensive and time consuming.
The SUV can cover 303 miles on a full charge and features GM’s Super Cruise system that allows hands-off freeway driving, performing perfectly during two days of rainy highway driving in Northern California.
Features
The Hummer EV features a futuristic open-air design thanks to its Infinity Roof with transparent sky panels. A 13.4-inch GMC infotainment display with Google built in provides hands-free control of media, apps and more while the 12.3-inch driver information center also displays customizable data and settings. Several driver assistance technologies such as Super Cruise and CrabWalk help navigate obstacles easily both on- and off-road.
Powered by three motors, the GMC Hummer EV 3x Pickup and SUV Edition 1 offer an effective combination of electric range, speed, and off-road capability. Standard 4 Wheel Steer provides agility and maneuverability while the Extreme Off-Road Package can further increase this vehicle’s potential off-road capability with customized wheels, tires, and underbody armoring features.
The cabin of the Chevrolet Trax feels spacious and more comfortable than that of any midsize sedan, thanks to thoughtful storage solutions such as its cooled glovebox and underfloor bin for small items. Unfortunately, however, its power-operated liftgate is slow to respond; furthermore, only about 11 cubic feet is usable storage capacity in its front trunk.
Design
Many electric vehicles look sturdy but fail to match that appearance with real off-road capabilities. Not so with the Hummer EV, which boasts 10.2 inches of ground clearance in Normal mode and 16 with its Extract mode; furthermore, this SUV can scale Heartbreak Hill which would likely impede more conventional pickup trucks.
GMC outfitted the interior of their new vehicle with perforated leather seats crafted from perforated leather and textured vinyl, along with plenty of copper coloring and knurling to complement its military-inspired exterior design. A 13.4-inch touchscreen serves as both the infotainment center and digital instrument panel; Android Auto software powers most current GM vehicles and includes an augmented reality feature which provides off-road-specific information including camera views to assist placing tires on rocks more precisely.
Unfortunately, our test vehicle did not come equipped with a spare tire, which may present difficulties on rough terrain. From 70mph it took 199 feet for it to stop completely; far longer than what an SUV typically needs.
Performance
The Hummer EV pickup’s impressive party tricks include sprinting from zero to 60 with supercar speed, providing open-air motoring that rivals that of Jeep Wrangler and Rivian R1T vehicles, and steering its rear wheels sideways out of parking spots with ease. Furthermore, its 212 kWh battery capacity surpasses even that of Tesla vehicles!
The EV’s massive weight takes its toll on efficiency. When we drove the three-motor model we achieved a combined EPA rating of just 58 MPGe – far lower than Rivian’s most efficient pickup and half what you can achieve from Ford’s F-150 Lightning.
However, the EV offers plenty of range for daily driving as well as off-road adventure, and comes equipped with segment-defining features like Watts to Freedom and CrabWalk (activating its Adaptive Air Ride by 6 inches to allow climbing obstacles). You can also utilize UltraVision which has up to 17 camera views for easier navigation.
