Mercedes invested significant effort into ensuring the G-Class’s transition to electric power wouldn’t erode its legendary off-road capabilities. To this end, electric motors were installed in each wheel for optimal off-roading, and an impact resistant battery casing was developed around its battery. Driving noise reduction was also optimized.
One such feature is G-TURN, which allows drivers to turn the vehicle two times on unpaved or loose off-road surfaces with just their body weight – an entertaining yet functional party trick!
EQ Technology
Mercedes has recently caused considerable uproar by including an electric powertrain in their iconic G-Class vehicle, but regardless of these reservations it continues to deliver on its off-road capabilities.
Four independent electric motors mounted near each wheel use intelligent torque vectoring to mimic differential locks, keeping each tire’s contact patch on the ground for improved traction and confidence when traversing rough terrain.
EQ Technology allows drivers to personalize their driving experience via various programs such as Comfort, Sport and Eco through DYNAMIC SELECT. A slightly raised bonnet, so-called air curtains in rear wheel-arch flares and Design Box on rear doors all contribute to improved aerodynamics on this electric G-Class vehicle. In addition, its 200kW DC fast charging capacity enables it to charge from 10% – 80% in just 32 minutes!
High-voltage battery
Arnold Schwarzenegger is an ardent fan of Mercedes G-Class models and riding one prompted CEO Dieter Zetsche to assure him that an electric G-Class would retain its “phenomenal off-road capability.”
The Electric G-Class delivers instant peak torque from a standstill for effortless acceleration, reaching 60mph in just 4.6 seconds and topping out at an electronically limited 112mph.
A high-voltage battery with 116kWh usable capacity offers both range and power for this vehicle, integrated into the ladder frame to keep its center of gravity low while featuring protection to withstand harsh environments. An AMG Line package featuring 20-inch AMG 10-spoke wheels adds sportiness while exterior paint choices range from Obsidian Black or MANUFAKTUR Night Black Magno give an authentic appearance; plus Burmester 3D Surround Sound System creates concert-like audio experiences.
Individual-wheel drive
The electric G-Class SUV features four electric motors with independently controlled torque distribution. This allows it to power its right and left wheels separately – known as tank turning – which helps it navigate obstacles or terrain with steep gradients more effectively.
Ola Kallenius, Mercedes CEO, recently demonstrated this feature in a video that can be seen below (beginning around 8:53 mark). Not only does the zero emission model offer incredible off-road capabilities, including 100% gradeability on certain surfaces – it even boasts 100% gradeability on its zero emissions!
For an exhilarating driving experience, the G-Class EV can be customized through its ELECTRIC DYNAMIC SELECT system with different drive programs that adjust parameters related to electric motors, transmission, suspension and ESP systems. Comfort – for optimal efficiency – as well as Trail and Rock modes provide opportunities for off-road adventure.
ECO Assistant
Mercedes announced plans to install an electric powertrain into one of their most iconic vehicles, raising doubts as to whether or not Mercedes could retain its legendary off-road capability. But, when shown what could happen under construction, doubts quickly subsided; indeed, G580 with EQ Technology proves an engineering marvel and demonstrates that switching from an internal combustion to electric propulsion doesn’t necessitate compromise in off-road prowess.
ECO Assistant automatically analyzes navigation data along an expected route and determines an optimal level of recuperation, alerting drivers via MBUX.
Off-road adventures require extensive underbody protection. A carbon composite plate was recently installed to shield the battery and other key components from rocks and dirt – this represents an immense improvement from older aluminum plates that could easily be damaged.
G-ROAR
Mercedes pledged that when Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger rode in its G-wagen for its debut in 2018, that they would electrify this iconic model series and they have since made good on that promise. Electric power units with their own mini dual-range gear sets were created and an impact resistant battery case that can withstand 33.5 inches of floodwater was manufactured; furthermore, an enjoyable driving noise has also been fine-tuned so as not to frighten off enthusiasts and more are all hallmarks of excellence from this car manufacturer.
The four electric motors can be configured to deliver performance comparable to that of the gas-powered AMG G 63, while two drive programs – Trail and Rock–can be selected via the ELECTRIC DYNAMIC SELECT dial. In addition, this system recognizes events like sharp turns or changes in road surface type ahead of time and adjusts throttle response and energy recuperation accordingly.
